Mannequins that represent the human body only in broad strokes are
considered abstract. Even among abstract manikins there is much
diversity... there are display mannequins with realistic, detailed
bodies and egg-headed faceless tops, mannequins that only vaguely
resemble humans (having two upper limbs, two lower limbs and maybe a
knob or swirl for a head) and manikins that look more like robots than
any person. Regardless of the style, abstract mannequins serve one
purpose - to display clothing on a three-dimensional form.
Department Stores often choose abstract mannequins in lieu of realistic
ones; some think that they look more classy. Of course, cheap
mannequins detract from any display.
If you choose realistic mannequins, make sure they are convincing enough
to attract rather than detract.
