n.
1. A life-size or partial representation of the human body, used
for the fitting
or displaying of clothes.
2. A jointed model of the human body used by artists.
3. One who models clothes.
Also known as: Dress Forms, Dress Dummies, Mannequins de Tailleurs,
Manichini, Schaufensterpuppe, Mannequins & Modelle.
If your business is selling clothes, mannequins are essential.
These days, mannequins are not just human. There are dogs,
cats, even dinosaurs for use in store windows. The selection of body types
is also much expanded. From abstract, almost alien-looking forms to jersey-covered torsos with only hints of detail made
for pinning fabric onto, to forms cast from actual human models, finely
detailed to include shape, muscle tone, and even veins, today's mannequins
vary widely. They are so "alluring" that they have been banned and
confiscated from stores in Iran, and are not allowed to be left undressed in
store windows in California.
One thing the retail industry does agree on - there's nothing better than
a three-dimensional form to show off clothes. Regardless of the style of the
rest of the store, mannequins find a niche in nearly any decor. Modern,
chrome-plated fixtures look great with abstract or even headless mannequins.
Rich, wood displays work well with realistic mannequins, either painted in
flesh tones, or in choices such as cameo (all white) or all black.

A change in mannequin sizing has been on the upswing... larger sizes for
larger populations. Not only are proportions increasing beyond the
previously standard "twiggy" styles, but fuller-figured mannequins with
"back" and larger breasts are also making appearances.
Don't underestimate the power of a great display to help you sell your
clothing!
Mannequins for Less
When it comes to buying mannequins, you have many choices. Designer,
name-brand mannequins like Patina V, Adel Rootstein,
John Nissan and Greneker are often chosen by upscale boutiques for their
realistic detail, but also come with upscale price tags. Smaller names offer similar mannequins at lesser prices. Even "no-name"
manufacturers create quite serviceable fiberglass and plastic mannequins and forms. Some, like auto makers, even produce name brands along with
their own, generic (but same high quality) ones.
You can find just about all the display supplies your
business needs by shopping online. From plastic to thick fiberglass resin,
the selection can't be beat!
All Your Display Needs
When you shop online, you'll also find a huge spectrum in terms of
style. Whether you want a cameo (all white), headless male manikin or a made-up, full-color female manikin with a body for lingerie, finding the exact
style that you need is quick and
easy.
